Vorth Mordrak

Grand Master Vorth Mordrak of the Grey Knights is a figure of awe and unease even among the superhuman warriors of the most secretive Chapter in the Adeptus Astartes, a commander whose battlefield presence is accompanied by phenomena that challenge the understanding of even the most learned daemonologists and psychic scholars in the Empire. Mordrak is the Survivor of Mortain — the sole Grey Knight to escape the catastrophic destruction of the fortress-world of Mortain by the forces of Chaos, a disaster that claimed the lives of every battle-brother in his company and left Mordrak with wounds that went far deeper than the physical. Since that devastating loss, Mordrak has been accompanied into battle by the spectral forms of his fallen brothers — translucent warriors of silver and light who materialize at moments of crisis to fight alongside their surviving commander with all the skill and fury they possessed in life.

The Ghost Knights, as these apparitions have come to be called, represent a phenomenon that the Grey Knights' Librarians and the Inquisition's scholars have been unable to fully explain. They are not daemons — their presence registers on psychic detection equipment as a positive spiritual signature rather than the negative resonance associated with Warp entities. They are not conventional psychic projections — their physical interactions with the environment and with enemies are too substantial and too independent of Mordrak's conscious control to be simple telekinetic constructs. The prevailing theory is that the Ghost Knights are genuine manifestations of the souls of fallen Grey Knights, their spirits so bound to their duty and to their surviving brother that they have refused to pass into the Warp's embrace and instead linger in the material universe as avenging shades.

Mordrak himself speaks little of the Ghost Knights, and what he does say is colored by the profound grief that has defined his existence since Mortain. He acknowledges their presence, fights beside them as he would fight beside living battle-brothers, and seems to draw both comfort and pain from their constant companionship. Whether the Ghost Knights represent a blessing or a curse — whether they are the Emperor of Mankind's gift to a loyal servant or a symptom of a psychic trauma so severe that it has torn a hole in the fabric of reality — remains a question that may never be definitively answered.
