The Immortal Carnifex

Old One Eye is the most infamous individual Carnifex in the history of the Tyranids invasions — a massive, scarred, seemingly indestructible bioform whose repeated resurrections from apparent death have made it a legend among both the defenders of the Empire and the scholars who study the Tyranid menace. Named for the crushed and ruined left eye socket that is its most distinctive feature — a wound sustained in some ancient battle that has never fully regenerated despite the creature's otherwise extraordinary healing capabilities — Old One Eye has become a symbol of everything that makes the Tyranid species so terrifying: their implacable resilience, their capacity for regeneration, and the unsettling suggestion that individual organisms within the Hive Mind may be more than the disposable biological drones they are commonly assumed to be.

Old One Eye, the seemingly immortal Carnifex that haunts the nightmares of Imperial soldiers

The Carnifex genus is one of the most feared organisms in the Tyranid arsenal — massive, heavily armored biological war engines designed for close-range destruction. A standard Carnifex stands several meters tall, is encased in armor-plated chitin that can withstand autocannon fire, and is armed with crushing claws and bio-weapons that can tear apart main battle tanks with contemptuous ease. They are the shock troops of the Tyranid swarm, deployed in the vanguard of major assaults to breach fortifications and destroy armored targets, and their appearance on the battlefield invariably triggers a response that reflects the genuine terror they inspire. A single Carnifex can turn the tide of a platoon-level engagement; a brood of them can break through defensive lines that have held against lesser Tyranid organisms for days.
Old One Eye is a Carnifex, but it is a Carnifex elevated to something approaching mythical status by its extraordinary resilience and its disconcerting habit of returning from the dead. The creature has been confirmed killed on at least seven separate occasions by forces ranging from Ultramarines strike teams to Astra Militarum artillery batteries, and on each occasion it has reappeared — sometimes within days, sometimes after months or years — regenerated from wounds that should have been utterly fatal, its body reconstructed by biological processes that defy the understanding of even the most knowledgeable Magos Biologis. Its crushed eye, paradoxically, is the one wound that never heals, remaining as a permanent reminder of whatever ancient trauma first marked it and as the identifying feature that allows Imperial forces to confirm that the creature they are facing is, once again, the same unkillable monster that has been haunting their nightmares.
The psychological impact of Old One Eye's apparent immortality is profound. The knowledge that a creature you have already killed has returned to fight again is deeply demoralizing, striking at the fundamental assumption that underlies all military planning — that if you hit something hard enough, it will eventually stop coming. Old One Eye defies this assumption with every resurrection, teaching the hard lesson that some enemies cannot be permanently destroyed no matter how much firepower is brought to bear against them. This has made the creature an object of almost superstitious dread among Imperial forces who have encountered it, with veterans of campaigns against Old One Eye reporting persistent nightmares, anxiety disorders, and a deep reluctance to face Tyranid forces again.

Famous Quotes

We killed it. Emperor as my witness, we killed it three times. And three times it rose again, each time more furious than the last. By the fourth encounter, we stopped trying to kill it and simply ran.
Sergeant Karro, Ultramarines 4th Company
The creature has been confirmed killed on seven separate occasions across three different theatres. It continues to reappear. Reclassification to Immortalis-grade threat recommended.
